Yamaha India to shift its focus to the premium-bike, scooter segment

Yamaha motor is a Japanese manufacturer of motorcycle, marine products such as boats and outboard motors, and other motorized products. In India, it is mainly selling two-wheelers with well-segregated product line but the main focus was middle-class society and now it is shifting its focus to the premium bike segment to target the other segments available in the market.
  • Yamaha has struggled in the 100-125cc segment in past few years as the market is shifting towards heavy and sporty bikes.
  • Yamaha is looking to create new sub-segment in the Indian market as this is the world’s largest and growing market.
  • They are going to bring bigger displacement engines and scooter and might use India as a base for exports.
  • As the future motorcycle line-up does not have the major 100-125cc offering, Yamaha is looking to bring the upgrade version of existing model and followed up with bigger displacement motorcycle of about 300-400cc by 2020.
Hiroyuki Yanagi (Global President of Yamaha) mentioned that they have an aggressive plan for India saying that Yamaha’s focus is on demographic segmentation before attempting its hands again at the mass market.
