‘Check for real ice-cream on the packs before buying them,’ urges Amul, in a new advertisement. The film cautions against frozen desserts that are made using ‘vanaspati tel’ and urges consumers to opt for ‘real ice-cream’, that’s made of milk, instead.
-
Hindustan Unilever (HUL), which markets frozen desserts, under the Kwality Walls brand, has initiated a legal battle against GCMMF Vadilal has also joined the suite against Amul.
-
According to HUL, Amul has been airing a misleading television commercial since March 2017. This advertisement makes factually incorrect statements creating apprehensions among consumers of frozen desserts.
-
They further add that the advertisement makes incorrect claims about the usage of ‘vanaspati/vanaspati-tel’ in frozen dessert products. Kwality Wall’s range of ‘frozen desserts’ do not contain Vanaspati but contains milk/milk solids like ice creams.
-
While, RS Sodhi, MD, GCMMF says that frozen desserts are masquerading as ice creams. By using low-cost ingredients, they are misleading consumers who are looking for real products. We are trying to make consumers aware of the difference….
-
However, it is difficult to argue about which is healthier. Often vegetable oils can actually contain fewer calories than dairy fat. In terms of nutritional value, the difference in the ingredients of ice cream and frozen yogurt is cream, the main nutritional difference is the fat content.
-
Consumers seem to be supporting Amul, if one is to go by the comments on an article that appeared on Times of India.
-
In the meantime, it’s not only the summer that is getting hot, so is this brawl between HUL and Amul. Next time you buy that Vadilal or Kwality Walls chocolate cone for some respite in the blazing sun, remember it is not ‘ice cream’ you are having.
