Britain’s Vodafone Group and Idea Cellular agreed on 20th March 2017 to merge their Indian operations to create the country’s biggest telecom business.
The combined group would have almost 400 million customers and 35% market share. It will push to become the number one telecom company in India.
Vodafone has endured a rather confused ride since it entered India in 2007 with fierce competition and tax battle making it its most unpredictable business so far.
The merger may be a way they can tackle Jio and Airtel. Since the launch of Jio, the telecom sector has become a battleground for all the companies engaging in a fierce price war.
