A basic understanding about DIY (marketing) :
At times when your shoes get torn or your shirt buttons get broken, you do not always rush to a cobbler or a tailor. You simply just stitch the button on the shirt and carry on with your daily chores. This way of completing the work without external help is called Do It Yourself (DIY).
Now let’s understand how this technique is used in marketing. There is a difference between small businesses and big businesses when it comes to managing the budget for marketing their products. There is always a crunch towards budget or at times there is no budget in small businesses. My Aunt has recently started a fast food business and she always tells how she has great dishes to offer but not the appropriate way to market it due a lack of capital. The same method is used in modern small or niche businesses to grow them effectively. Let’s understand this into further detail !
First let’s understand why this particular marketing is important for small or niche businesses. It is important as it places the owner in control of how its business is represented. Who knows the business better than its owner. The owner has all the important information about Their business regarding its customers, what are their demands and needs, and what more can their business offer or add value to their customers. Do It Yourself marketing isn’t about doing it all by yourself, but choosing the right people to work with and providing them with the necessary guidance or information to market it to other consumers.
Glimpse of a business using DIY marketing:
Most of us would be familiar with the brand ‘Nish Hair’ started and managed by actor/entrepreneur Parul Gulati. You may have also seen her in the show ‘Shark Tank’ for funding. Before her brand became popular, she was the only one managing her entire business. Then she used marketing ideas such as cold emails and the creation of content on viral or engaging topics from that time. She even used her social media platforms to promote her business. After some time, her decisions were not entirely taken by her because she also had hired a social media manager to further reach a wider audience.
